International Medicine and Nursing internships in Thailand

Interning abroad on a Medicine or Nursing internship with Projects Abroad offers an excellent way to gain medical and nursing work experience combined with the chance to help people in a less developed medical system. As a Medicine or Nursing volunteer in Thailand you will have the opportunity to gain exposure in a variety of areas.
All Medicine and Nursing volunteers in Thailand must have completed at least one year of medical-related studies or training by the time they begin. Volunteers also need to join these projects for at least two months. Each placement is then tailored to your interests and level of experience.
Medicine and Nursing interns in Thailand work in Surat Thani, about two hours drive from Krabi. Interns are based in one of three Primary Care Units, all under the management of Surat Thani hospital. Each Primary Care Unit is run by a head nurse. Interns will be involved in work at the centers and also on outreach work in the communities as part of the Mobile Primary Care Unit program.
Your Role as a Medicine or Nursing Intern in Thailand
Within the Primary Care Units interns may work in a variety of areas including primary diagnoses, clinics for diabetes and high blood pressure, maternity, emergency care, vaccinations, family planning, and counseling.
Your role on the project will usually start by being observational and you will shadow the local staff. If you show enthusiasm and initiative and develop a good relationship with the medical staff, you may find that you gain enough trust to be given more to do. As with any job – and especially in the field of medicine - you must prove yourself to be trustworthy before you are given responsibilities.
The facilities are generally of a basic standard and treatments may differ from what you expect at home. You should be prepared to see some shocking cases and try not to get emotionally involved with the patients
Interns on the medical placements usually work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free. Daily hours vary and will be decided during your first meeting with the supervisor at your placement. Please remember that these medical placements should be taken seriously and that the doctors and nurses you work with will expect you to be punctual and dress professionally.
